  The Core has also been able to upgrade its DNA sequence analysis capacities by purchasing the The 48-capillary 3730 DNA Analyzer from Applied Biosystems. The 3730 is the Gold Standard in medium-to-high throughput genetic analysis. Used for DNA fragment analysis applications such as microsatellites, AFLP, SNP analysis, mutation detection and traditional DNA sequencing. Please contact Ping Jiang for details.

The Core Facility has also upgraded its Atomic Force/Scanning imaging capabilities. adding the new Multimode V from Veeco, which performs the full range of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) techniques. Both the CPII and Multimode V measure surface characteristics, such as topographyelasticity, friction, adhesion, annd magnetic/electrical fields. A short mechanical path length between probe tip and sample provides very fast scan rates with nM resolutions. Please contact Hui Zhao for more details.

 

  This year the Core facility has focused upon significantly enhancing our proteomics capabilities, and has acquired an ABI 4800 Proteomics Discovery System from Applied Biosystems. The 4800 is one of the most sensitive protein / biomarker discovery systems currently available using time-of-flight MS/MS technology. The system will assuredly become the work-horse in the core facility for protein identification, and detection of modified proteins - taking full advantage of the MALDI TOF/TOF platform. The 4800 Analyzer is the only MALDI TOF/TOF mass spectrometer with on-axis laser irradiation, enabling sensitivity in the attamole range. Proprietary source modeling algorithms enable mass detection across the MALDI plate in the low ppm range. Call or email Hyuk-Kyu-Seoh for more details.

Efficient workflows and a Results Dependent Analysis software set this system apart from similar mass spectrometers. The OptiBeam™ on-axis laser provides a 10X increase in sensitivity over the previous 4700 allowing for a more confident identification and quantification of peptides that other systems miss.
