NSC EtBr/GLOVE USAGE PROCEDURES FOR CORE FACILITIES

Gloves should always be worn when handling hazardous materials, and to avoid cross-contamination gloves must be removed when using or touching communal equipment/surfaces. Different glove types should be used appropriately; visit the GSU Chemical Safety website at Glove Resistance table for information on glove types and their resistance to chemicals. The following guidelines must be followed when using NSC Core Facilities.

1. Keep your gloves on while handling hazardous material (acrylamide/agarose gels)
2. Place the gel in a cold container
3. Remove your gloves
4. Close the cold container
5. Carry the container to core facility through hallway using no gloves
6. Sign into the logbook for the instrument
7. Put on a new pair of gloves
8. Remove the gel from the cold container
9. Place the gel into Imager
10. Remove one glove to adjust knobs with gloveless hand while moving the gel into place with gloved hand
11. Remove the other glove
12. Work with the keyboard and instruments using no gloves
13. When you are done, open the instrument door and also open the labeled hazardous waste container in the core facility.
14. Don a new pair of gloves and place the gel into the waste container or back into the cold container.
15. Remove your gloves
16. Close the instrument door and place lid onto the waste container
17. Sign out of the logbook that instrument worked properly. If there were any problems, note in logbook AND contact Debby Walthall (404) 413-5363) or John Houghton (404) 413-5390)

In case of a spill in the hallway during transportation of the gel follow the spill response procedures below:
1. Isolate the area using any available means
2. Alert others of the emergency
3. Evaluate the risk of exposure
4. If there is no exposure risk, clean up with a spill kit
5. Spill kits are located in your lab and in common facility rooms (location on door)
6. If the spill is out of your control call Environmental Programs:

1. Call 9-911. Always call 911 first.
2. Tell them address.

3. Evacuate. Always assume fire pulls DO NOT work. Are you scared – then get out of building.
4. Know what class of fire. Campus fire extinguishers are for type a, b and c fires.
a. ash
b. petroleum oil base
c. electrical
d. flammable metals
e. kitchen commercial
5. Fire extinquisher.
a. Make sure charged. Dial on top that is marked full.
b. Pick up by handle.
6. Fire extinquisher. PASS
a. P. Pull Pin completely out.
b. A. Ai hose at BASE of fire or just over the top of the liquid.
c. S. Squeeze handle. Hold all the way down.
d. S. Sweep over fire; overlap fire.
7. Fire. Stand 10 – 12 ft. back from fire with wind to your back. Or have door to your back. Keep hose low. Best if there are 2 people present.
8. If at ANY TIME you get scared, leave the room and building.
9. Fire extinguisher lasts for 6 years. The metal ones are the best. Plastic ones tend to leak.
